Evolutionary Approaches to Molecular Biology: Neutral Networks in DNA Assembly Search

Assembling the DNA sequence jigsaw puzzle is no easy undertaking, and many computational techniques have been applied to date. Recent uses of evolutionary algorithms for this task have been based on rather misleading and inappropriate ideas, and have thus thrown unpromising results. It is the aim of this paper to emphasize the importance of selectively neutral mutations in generating successful evolutionary techniques for the assembly of DNA sequences. The results shown herein are expected to generalize for similar optimization tasks.
